One Day internationals are the middle child of the cricketing family they lack the history of the oldest child (the tests) or the youthful excitement of the new one (the Twenty20s). Let us hope that England and New Zealand can serve up an exciting series when they take part in a three game ODI battle which gets underway Friday morning from Lord’s.
Confidence will be high in the England camp after a 2-0 victory in the test series and the home team can be backed at 2/5 (GENERAL) to win the series. England will also be boosted by the fact that they beat the Black Caps 2-1 in New Zealand. In fact the hosts have now won 12 of their last 18 completed ODI games while the visitors have won just four of their last 14. England sit second in the ODI rankings and with home advantage are the current favourites for the ICC Champions Trophy. New Zealand meanwhile sit eighth in the rankings and are in real danger of being overtaken by Bangladesh. All the signs then point to a home series win though 2/5 looks an unbackable price especially as the Black Caps actually have won five of the last six ODI meetings in this country between the two sides. If you think New Zealand can keep the run going here then you can side with them at 5/2 (sportingbet).
The correct series market is headed by England winning 2-1 which can be backed at 11/8 (BETVICTOR) while an England clean sweep is available at 9/4 (ladbrokes/CORAL).
New Zealand to win the series 2-1 can be backed at 3/1 (betfred/sportingbet/STAN JAMES) and a New Zealand clean sweep is priced at 16/1 (STAN JAMES). Joe Root did the business for in the test series and it seems sensible to stick with the youngster here to be top series batsman in a market that is headed by Cook at 3/1 (BETVICTOR/ladbrokes). Root can be backed at 6/1 (GENERAL) which looks generous on a player in such good form. The Yorkshire batsman has been as impressive in this format as in the test series averaging 81.50 runs and going no lower than 28 (not out). Root finished just eight behind topscorer Trott in New Zealand and with confidence sky high he looks the way to play.
The top New Zealand batsman market is headed by Brendan McCullum at 7/2 (GENERAL) who has a ODI average of 42 against England. McCullum, like all the New Zealand batsman, looked badly out of sorts in the tests and was tormented by Stuart Broad in the tests.
The first test at Lord’s could belong to Stuart Broad who produced sensational figures of seven wickets for 44 runs from 11 overs on day four.I amazed to see ladbrokes offering odds of 11/10 on him to take more than 1.5 wickets in the First Test. The Nottinghamshire star has taken at least two wickets on four of his last five ODI appearances. In addition take Broad at 6/4 with the same firm in a matchbet against James Anderson who has a poor record at Lord’s. Anderson has emerged wicketless in five of his last six 50-over internationals at this venue. In terms of the match betting England can be backed at 8/15 (ladbrokes) for first game success while New Zealand are a best priced 7/4 (SPREADEX).
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Stuart Broad to take over 1.5 wickets in first ODI, 11/10 (ladbrokes)
SILVER: Stuart Broad to take more wickets than James Anderson in first ODI, 6/4 (ladbrokes)
BRONZE: Joe Root to be top series batsman v New Zealand, 6/1 (GENERAL)
