Chants of ’Come on Andy’, Pimms (other alcoholic drinks are available) and Strawberries and Cream can mean only one thing it is Wimbledon time. Sports and fruit fans though might have do without one essential ingredient this year as the UK Strawberry crops have been badly hampered by the weather. Tennis fans though will happy settle for foreign imports as long as it is a British man lifting the trophy. The question on everybody’s lips is can Andy Murray be the first Britsh male since 1936 to win Wimbledon?

Bookmakers make Novak Djokovic the favourite for the 2013 title with him available at 5/4 (GENERAL). The Serb won Wimbledon in 2011 so has the pedigree for this venue and is ranked number one player in the world having won the Australian Open and pushed Nadal close at the French Open. He is no doubt in good form and many will point to the nice draw that he has. Djokovic is 3/10 (CORAL/BWIN) to win the first quarter though both Haas and Berdych have beaten Nole here before and his first round opponent Florian Mayer reached the last eight here last year. Djokovic is the deserved favourite though one I would certainly be willing to take on.

Andy Murray is the 4/1 (paddy Power/william hill/YOU WIN) second favourite and all the signs suggest he could go one better than last year. The Scot made the final here last year before winning Olympic Gold at the same venue, So is clearly one of the best grass players in the modern game. The draw was kind also for Murray as he avoided a quarter-final with Nadal and now will not meet the Spaniard or Federer until the semi-final. You can back Murray at 3/1 (boylesports) with the security of money back if Rafa Nadal wins Wimbledon. Rafa NAdal is available at a very generous 5/1 (youwin) or at a shorter price with a number of bookmakers willing to offer the concession of money back if Andy Murray wins. People seem to think Nadal does not like Wimbledon but this is a myth as he has made the final here on five of his last six appearances. The Spaniard was in great form at the French and to me represents the next player most likely to win the event after Murray.

Some people might think Federer is value at 10/1 (paddy Power/CORAL/YOU WIN) as he is the King of grass. This though has not been a kind draw with a likely run of Nadal, Murray and Djokovic standing in his way. The Swiss ace no longer has the fitness or stamina for so many tough games in short succession.

Just two of the finalists in the last seven years (Roddick and Berdych) have been outside these four players so it does not make much sense to look for players at a bigger price to win Wimbledon. With Nadal and Federer in the same quarter it does leave things wide open for one player to make the semi-finals in the second quarter though. David Ferrer, who heads the market, has never reached further than the last eight and looks an opposable favourite. Del Potro, Dimitorv, Nishikori and Raonic all have questionable grass court form and are all in this quarter. The two players I like are Phillip Kohlschreiber who is a 14/1 (GENERAL) and Ivan Dodig who is a 66/1 (YOU WIN) chance. The draw has sadly pitched them together in round one so you can either wait until the end of the match to back them or take them both now at bigger prices. Kohlschreiber reached the quarters here last year while Dodig reached the last four at Eastbourne recently.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Andy Murray to win Wimbledon, 3/1 (boylesports), money back if Rafa Nadal wins the tournament.
SILVER: Phillip Kohlschreiber to win second quarter, 14/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: Ivan Dodig to win second quarter, 66/1 (YOU WIN).
