Chinese teenager great value to complete medley double

Most bookmakers must have not seen the women`s 400 metres individual medley world record swim of Shiwen Ye because that is the only rational explanation as to why they are offering odds of around evens about the Chinese teenager doing the London London 2012 Olympic Games medley double.

Ye swam nearly seven seconds quicker than she did in her home country 12 months ago to go from World Championships fifth to Olympic Games first in the women`s 400m individual medley and now it is time for her to go for gold in her pet event, the women`s 200m individual medley, in London.

Then only 15 years old, Ye won last year`s world title by one tenth of a second from Australia`s Alicia Coutts, with Ariana Kukors of the United States of America another 12 hundredths of a second back in the bronze medal position.

Clearly on the evidence of her record-breaking performance in the final of the London 2012 Olympic Games women`s 400m individual medley, Ye has improved significantly from 15 to 16 and she should be considerably shorter in the betting.

While Coutts represents a significant threat to Ye, as does Kukors, defending Olympic women`s 200m individual medley champion Stephanie Rice is a spent force having undergone shoulder surgery that has blunted her speed. The Australian was equal sixth behind the superstar Chinese youngster in the eight-lap race that she had won well four years ago.

Any odds greater than 1-2 about Ye winning London 2012 Olympic Games women`s 200m individual medley constitute value so the quotes of 10-11 and evens are attractive.

The women`s 400m individual medley is one of four London 2012 Olympic Games swimming gold medals up for grabs on the fourth day of competition, with the night`s packed program featuring the men`s 200m butterfly, men`s 4x200m freestyle relay and women`s 200m freestyle as well.

Michael Phelps was 67 hundredths of a second too good for Japan`s Takeshi Matsuda in last year`s World Championships men`s 200m butterfly but that is reflected by bookmakers quoting him at around 1-3 to win the London 2012 Olympic Games equivalent. It looks like a no-bet competition.

The London 2012 Olympic Games men`s 4x200m freestyle relay is America`s to lose based on the individual times of the top four swimmers from each nation. The Americans are 4-11 and that is probably over the odds, albeit not by much.

There are few London 2012 Olympic Games swimming events that are more competitive than the women`s 200m freestyle, with bookmakers betting 10-3 the field. There would have to be a value case for supporting current world leader Allison Schmitt at around 9-2. She won America`s recent Olympic trials in Omaha in a time 26 hundredths of a second faster than anyone else has registered since the beginning of 2011.

The London 2012 Olympic Games women`s football tournament continues with gold medal favourite Brazil playing Great Britain at Wembley Stadium. Brazil and England have not played each before so there is nothing in the way of head-to-head form on which to base betting decisions.

Both the Brazilians and the Britons have qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games women`s football quarter-finals so the match is one to watch and assess ahead of the business end of the hugely popular competition in the coming days.
