Andy Murray will face off against Kevin Anderson tonight in the fourth round of this year`s Miami Masters. The Brit won this tournament back in 2009 and 2013, beating Novak Djokovic (6-2, 7-5) and David Ferrer (2-6, 6-4, 7-6) in his respective finals, but was a beaten finalist in 2012 when losing out to world number one Djokovic (6-1, 7-6).
Anderson, conversely, has never made it to a Miami Masters final, his best finish being recorded in 2011 when reaching the competition`s quarter-final stage. Prior to being dumped out of the tournament at this stage by Djokovic (6-4, 6-2) whom Anderson had previously beaten in the second round of the 2008 renewal, the South African got the beating of Nikolay Davydenko (6-4, 6-3), Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (6-3, 5-7, 6-4), Pablo Andujar (6-2, 6-3) and John Isner (6-3, 7-6).
Indeed Murray also has a superior head-to-head record over the Johannesburg-born star. The two men have played four matches against each other, the Scot winning three to Anderson`s one. Only taking into account their encounters on hard court surfaces, Murray has won two ties to Anderson`s one. The last time the two players met on court was in the quarter-final of last year`s Valencia Open.
The 28-year-old South African grabbed the opening set on a tie-break but lost the second and third sets to exit the competition. Both these results finished 6-4 in Murray`s favour. bet365 have odds of 6/4 on there being a tie-break in tonight`s clash whilst ladbrokes` 7/2 says that a tie-break will appear in the first set. Eleven-to-two, available at both ladbrokes and sportingbet, says that Murray will have to come behind from losing the first set to take the whole match.
The Dunblaine-born star would go on to take the whole Valencia Open, seeing off Tommy Robredo in the final stage of the tournament. The 27-year-old would lose out by six games to three in the first set but take the second and third stages on tie-breaks.
Murray`s other hard court victory over Anderson was recorded back in the Australian Open of 2010. Anderson could only claim four games in the whole match as his opponent ran out the straight sets victor 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. sportingbet have 5/11 on Murray taking the match in straight sets once again though 7/2, on offer at bet365, ladbrokes and william hill, says that the 31-time ATP champion will run out the winner over three sets.
Roger Federer would go on to beat Murray in the final of this Grand Slam, the four set result reading 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Ranked 17th in the world, Anderson`s only victory over his rival today took place in the second round of the 2011 Rogers Cup, Murray falling to a straight sets defeat. Anderson picked up six games to Murray`s three in the first before winning by a mammoth six games to one in the second. Both betfair and boylesports have 14/1 on Anderson beating Murray in straight sets once again.
The two-time ATP title winner would eventually exit this competition in the third stage, failing to overcome Stanislas Wawrinka (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).
As both players are seeded in this year`s renewal of the Miami Masters, both received a bye through to the second round stage. Andy Murray got the better of American Donald Young in round two (6-4, 6-2) before easing his way past seed 27, Santiago Giraldo (6-3, 6-4). So far, Anderson has also seen off an American in Sam Querrey (6-7, 7-6, 6-4) whilst also getting the better of Argentina`s 24th seed Leonardo Mayer (6-4, 6-4).
Both men have reached one tournament final this year, neither failing to do the business to claim their respective trophies. Murray lost out to Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open (7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0) whilst Anderson fell at the hands of Kei Nishikori in the Memphis Open final (6-4, 6-4).
