League 1

The betting for the first goalscorer market is headed by Leigh Griffiths who scored an impressive 23 goals in 36 games for Hibernian last season while out on loan. Wolves could have done with that firepower as they struggled in the Championship and he is likely to be handed the chance to lead the line for them in League One this season. Bookmakers have him as 7/1 (bet365/ladbrokes/william hill) chance though that looks a little short on a player who has yet to net a goal in the Football League.

Leon Clarke is next at 16/1 (GENERAL) and although Clarke has goals in him it is a worry if he will even still be at Coventry at the end of August as the Sky Blues are having real off-field problems at the moment.

Clayton Donaldson (18/1-SKYBET/betfred) and Will Grigg (20/1-SKYBET/ladbrokes) were both among the goals last season and though they will be expected to be this season they will both line up for the same side which means they will have to share the goals. I like the look of Kevin Lisbie at 66/1 (william hill) as he grabbed 16 last season for Leyton Orient and should not slow down his scoring this season. What makes Lisbie a great bet, other than the fact he is a proven scorer, is that he is 34-year-old which means that no bigger club will come calling for him in the transfer window.

Shrewsbury are the bookmakers favourite at 15/8 (SKYBET/BETVICTOR) to be relegated though the Shrews will be confident after coming 16th in the league last season. I think Graham Turner and his side can be confident of survival once more as a lot of clubs at this end of the table have bigger problems. At least Shrewsbury have the own ground which Coventry do not and the Sky Blues could be value in the relegation market at 5/1 (188 BET).

Shrewsbury and Coventry though at least have a manager which is more than Swindon have and with a change in ownership and financial restraints in place 13/2 (BWIN/betway) could be value on the South West side dropping right down from sixth.

Walsall have lost around 40 goals from their side last season and at 7/2 (GENERAL) might have their problems this season. As might Crewe who have a rape charge hanging over a large number of their team as well as the loss of key player Luke Murphy. Crewe are 4/1 (GENERAL) to go down and this might appeal to some. This is before we even get to sides like Colchester (2/1-BETVICTOR) and Tranmere (9/2-Stan James/Coral) who ended the season in terrible form. The relegation market then could be tight and with so many potential candidates for the drop it is one market that I will be happy to swerve.

Finally take Leyton Orient to top a special six team betting group that is created by CORAL. MK Dons, Rotherham, Bradford, Coventry, Swindon are the other teams in the group and these are sides that Orient finished above last season. To find them at 6/1 outsiders then is incredible and a price not to be missed. Also at smaller prices but for bigger stakes take the 5/2 (STAN JAMES) on them to top a group containing Crawley, Crewe and Tranmere which they should do comfortably.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Leyton Orient to top Stan James Group D, 5/2
SILVER: Leyton Orient to top Coral Group B, 6/1
BRONZE: Kevin Lisbie EW top League One goalscorer, 66/1 (william hill)
