The Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh is the venue for the first ever Coral Masters Darts which features the top 16 ranked players from the PDC Order of Merit and will be televised this weekend (1st to 3rd) by ITV4.
Phil Taylor is the number one seed and bookmakers favourite at 13/8 with boylesports who at the time of writing were best price or equal best price on the top seven in the betting. The Power will look to continue a remarkable year that has seen him win the World Championship, the World Matchplay, Championship League Darts, the PDC World Cup of Darts, the UK Open, the Syndey Darts Masters and the recent World Grand Prix. Taylor will be keen to add this event to his list and he looks hard to oppose. He has a nie route to the semi-finals firstly he is against Terry Jenkins who has beaten him only three times in their previous 39 meetings. If Taylor wins that one then he will move on to a match with one of Wes Newton and Justin Pipe and he looks comfortable to win his quarter at 4/11 (SKYBET).
SKYBET at the time of writing were the only firm priced up on each quarter with the most wide open the Second Quarter. The betting here is headed in the betting by James Wade and Simon Whitlock both of whom are 6/4. Both players met in the quarter finals of the World Grand Prix with Wade coming out on top though the Australian leads the overall head-to-head record between the pair 15-12. Kevin Painter and Mervyn King are the two other players in this section and both re dangerous opponents on their day.
The third quarter features the second seed and tournament second favourite Michael van Gerwen. The Dutchman is the Premier League champion and was runner-up at the World Championship and can be backed at 10/3 (boylesports). His recent form though has not been as strong as his first half of the year AND Mighty Mike was out in the quarter finals in the World Grand Prix. He has a tricky opener against Peter Wright of Scotland scheduled before a battle with Dave Chisnall and Raymond van Barneveld. Chisnall did the each-way business for us in the World Grand Prix going through to a final against our other selection Phil Taylor. Chisnall has a tough opener this time against Raymond van Barneveld and as such I will not be getting involved this time at odds of 25/1 (boylesports/BWIN).
Third seed Adrian Lewis heads quarter four and is a 10/1 (BOYLESPORTS) chance to lift the trophy this weekend. Jackpot is a little out of form though after going out in the last 16 in the World Grand Prix and the last 32 in a recent PDC European Tour. Lewis begins his campaign with a match against Kim Huybrechts and the Belgian has been in great form in recent Tour events winning the Dutch Masters and a players event in Ireland. Huybrechts can be backed at 13/8 (SKYBET) see off Lewis in Round One and this looks a bet worth taking.
Also in this quarter of the draw I think it might be worth a little each-way interest on Robert Thornton to make the final at odds of 33/1 (GENERAL). The Scot has a reasonable opener with Andy Hamilton before meeting one of Lewis or Huybrechts. Thornton was excellent in front of his home crowd in the Premier League drawing with eventual champion Michael van Gerwen in Aberdeen and hammering Simon Whitlock 7-1 from Glasgow. The boost of playing in front of a passionate home crowd could see the Thorn raise his game.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Phil Taylor to win Darts Masters, 13/8 (BOYLESPORTS)
SILVER: Robert Thornton EW in Darts Masters, 33/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: Kim Huybrechts to beat Adrian Lewis, 13/8 (SKYBET)
