After suffering a potentially crucial derby defeat against Manchester City at the Etihad Arena, Alex Ferguson will be looking for an immediate response from his Manchester United side when they take on Swansea City at Old Trafford on Sunday May 6.

The Red Devils now trail City in the title race by goal difference with just two fixtures remaining in the current campaign, but they could be three points behind their enemies by the time the live Sunday tea-time action gets underway.

United were poor on the whole throughout their clash with City and succumbed to a league double relatively tamely all things considered.

After starting on the back foot, Ferguson’s men were unable to get a grip of the contest and it seemed only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken.

Vincent Kompany obliged for City, taking advantage of some woeful man marking by Chris Smalling – and United must certainly now step up a gear if they are to hold any hope of wrestling back top spot.

Bad news perhaps then for Swansea City who could well find themselves on the end of a proverbial backlash at Old Trafford.

Brendan Rogers’ side have performed with much credit for the majority of the season however their form has tailed off significantly in recent weeks after guaranteeing Premier League safety early doors.

Their 4-4 draw at the Liberty Stadium with already doomed Wolves last weekend demonstrated once more that the Welsh outfit may be running out of steam and a trip to Old Trafford will not be relished at such a pivotal stage of the campaign – especially as the hosts will be hell bent on getting back to winning ways.

Despite their solid return to the top flight, most of Swansea’s good work has been done in front of their home supporters and they have indeed lost ten matches from 17 on the road.

They will have a massive task on their hands to prevent an eleventh away loss going against them here and United should be able to exploit tired legs comfortably over the course of the ninety minutes.

Now that they are behind in the title race once more, United are likely to shed the pressure and perform with the fluency which saw them hunt Manchester City down earlier in the year.

Wayne Rooney amongst others will be in no mood to mess around and the hosts can use their pace and physicality to put Swansea to the sword from the outset.

Ferguson has always been effective at getting a riposte out of his troops and the 2/9 about United reflects how easily they should acquire three points.

It may be worth betting a little more adventurously however and after many heavy score lines already this term, punters may be about to witness another one.

United are an attractive looking 6/4 shot to satisfy a two goal handicap and they should have no problems in doing so with an average performance likely to be far too strong for the Swans who are by all accounts ready for the final whistle on May 13.
